Visual Perception: Neural Networks for Stereopsis.
How does our brain use differences between the images in our two eyes, binocular disparities, to generate depth perception? New work shows that a type of neural network trained on natural binocular images can learn parameters that match key properties of visual cortex. Most information is conveyed by cells which sense differences between the two eyes' images.
متن کاملAircraft Visual Identification by Neural Networks
In the present paper, an efficient method for three dimensional aircraft pattern recognition is introduced. In this method, a set of simple area based features extracted from silhouette of aerial vehicles are used to recognize an aircraft type from its optical or infrared images taken by a CCD camera or a FLIR sensor. These images can be taken from any direction and distance relative to the fly...
متن کاملSelf-organizing neural networks for perception of visual motion
-The human visual system overcomes ambiguities, collectively known as the aperture problem, in its local measurements of the direction in which visual objects are moving, producing unambiguous percepts of motion. A new approach to the aperture problem is presented, using an adaptive neural network model. The neural network is exposed to moving images during a developmental period and develops i...

How does the visual system generate percepts of moving forms? How does this happen when the forms are emergent percepts, such as illusory' contours or segregated textures, and the motion percept is apparent motion between the emergent forms? We develop a neural model of form-motion interactions to explain and simulate parametric properties of psychophysical motion data and to make predictions a...
متن کاملNeural pathways for visual speech perception
This paper examines the questions, what levels of speech can be perceived visually, and how is visual speech represented by the brain? Review of the literature leads to the conclusions that every level of psycholinguistic speech structure (i.e., phonetic features, phonemes, syllables, words, and prosody) can be perceived visually, although individuals differ in their abilities to do so; and tha...
